Acquired color deficiency
Some changes in color vision occur throughout life even in healthy individuals. These changes can be explained in terms of yellowing of the ocular media and perhaps changes in retinal sensitivity. Color vision deficiencies can arise at any time throughout life as a result of general or ocular disease, trauma, medication or as a result of exposure to toxic substances. Unlike congenital color deficiencies, acquired defects commonly affect one eye only and affect males and females equally.
The effects of various diseases on color vision has only been fully recognised in recent years. This is partly because acquired defects often affect blue perception and most color vision tests only screen for red-green defects.
