Color Discrimination Basics

Before considering the various forms of color deficiency, it is necessary to understand the basics of color discrimination.

In order to discriminate between different wavelengths, two or more photoreceptors with different but overlapping spectral absorption are required. To understand why this is so, consider the situation for individuals with one, two and three types of photopigment - known as monochromats, dichromats and trichromats respectively.
